El Futuro Es Nuestro: It’s Our Future
Organizing H2A farmworkers to improve our conditions, protect our rights, and build our collective power
El Futuro es Nuestro (or It’s Our Future, IOF) is a worker-led initiative organizing H2A and immigrant farmworkers in North Carolina. We confront exploitative working and living conditions by training leaders, addressing grievances in the fields and labor camps, coordinating mutual aid, organizing direct action, and cultivating labor solidarity.
We envision a world in which farmworkers’ human rights are honored and where they are able to work with dignity, fairness, and self-determination.
Our Priorities
Our work includes outreach, organizing, training, and direct action, focused on our primary campaigns:
- End forced meal plans
- Policy advocacy in the US and Mexico, including ending corruption in the H2A program, protecting workers’ rights in the US, and ensuring access to services in Mexico
- Not One More Death (campaign against heat stress)
Our Leaders
El Futuro es Nuestro is a worker-led movement made up of H2A farmworkers who are directly impacted by exploitative conditions in the fields, labor camps, and on the journey from Mexico to the US. Most of our leadership started out as members of the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC), but became disenchanted with the union following years of failure to adequately represent its members, siding with growers over workers, and lack of enforcement of the union contract. As a result, we formed a new farmworker-led organization in 2021, and have been organizing and advocating ever since.
